Finding Chartered Accountants Without a Website in India

· 2 min read

An accounting firm with a solid run of Google reviews and a WhatsApp number instead of a website is a common find across Indian cities, especially outside the biggest metros. "Chartered Accountant" is a protected title here, not a generic job description, and there's a single national body behind it.

ICAI, and two different numbers worth knowing apart

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) regulates the profession and runs a members directory, searchable by membership number or by name, at icai.org. A practising CA has an individual membership number; the firm itself, if it's registered as one, carries a separate Firm Registration Number — a distinction that matters because a fraud case ICAI has dealt with involved someone misusing a real member's credentials while attaching them to the wrong firm details. Checking both, not just one, is the more careful version of this.

A newer layer: UDIN

For documents a CA has actually signed or certified — audit reports, certificates, the kind of paperwork that matters for compliance — ICAI also runs a Unique Document Identification Number (UDIN) system, checkable at a separate portal. This is a document-level check, not a way to confirm a business exists or is reachable; it matters more once an actual working relationship starts than at the lead-finding stage.

Finding firms first

None of ICAI's lookups are built to be browsed by city or specialisation — they confirm a name you already have, the same limitation as every licensing register in every country this applies to. Google Maps, Bing Maps, Apple Maps and open map data are the practical way to find accounting firms by location in the first place; an ICAI search is a second, selective step once a shortlist exists.

For a live sense of scale, AyePin tracks roughly how many accountants in India currently have no website at all, from the same open data.

AyePin finds the firm from the Maps listing the way a business owner searching for one would, and leaves ICAI membership and firm registration as separate facts to check — never assumed from a listing or a star rating.
